Our Conservation Approach

In 2023 we opened Pica Rico Deli in Helston.

We serve fresh Mexican street food, using the best local produce.

The base of the food we cook is Maize, cooked and ground to make our beautiful tortillas.

We've spent a few years experimenting with growing field corn here in Cornwall & we're delighted to have become a part of the community at Mount Carleese farm, so we can establish our Milpa (the 3 sisters growing method.)

We aim to develop our knowledge of ancient growing techniques used by the pre-Hispanic people of Latin America and create further connections with Cornwall and Mexico.

I was initially attracted to help out at the Mount Carlees kitchen garden as I felt drawn to growing organic food pulled toward more self-sufficient ways of living, and wishing to be part of more ecological connection in what we are all doing here. If it was possible to explore that while helping other people out, then great!

As soon as I stepped on the land I had this sense of belonging, alongside an almost instant flame of purpose igniting in me.

The wisdom of the place and the people runs through everything.

I was allowed opportunity to experiment with growing vegetables. I found it fun. I took pride in it. It was as if each individual, beautifully formed tomato carried with it responsibility, some unwritten promise for the future.

The openness of allowing creativity was striking, to me. To be given access to land in this way seemed to me unexpectedly generous while, conversely, feeling natural. There was complete clarity in feeling like this is the only thing to be done.

From that the creativity becomes contagious. New ways of doing things, new ideas, new visions for the future, new people bringing new energy. The cycle continues.

From trying my hand at organic growing to increasing my education on permaculture practices. I wish this all to form a big part of my life moving forward.

It will.

This year, alongside Francis & Jen, I look forward to cultivating "Pig field". Yes, the obvious intention is that of cultivating crops but it is so much more than that.

We are part of building out this space, this community. Attracting more. More nature, more wildlife, more organic produce to serve the locality, more initiative, more feasting meals with friends. One life, more enjoyment, more connection.

I look forward to it all. I look forward to those early sunrise, face-to-face, chance encounters with deer. The kind creature giving a nod of acceptance;

you're alright, you can stay – before gliding off

It is wonderful to be a part of the family and I look forward to all that we can do.

Hi, I’m Mark 👋. My team and I are delighted to be joining the growing family in the One Life Ecology Project at Mount Carlees Farm.

Our growing journey began in spring 2020 as a passion project and a lot of hard work! The hours paid off as I subsequently launched my market garden and food box delivery service in the summer of 2021.

Our new project at Mount Carlees is an opportunity to reconnect people to where their food comes from and to form positive lasting relationships with our community. We hope to share our joy of growing with our neighbours on site. We also plan to invite our friends and supporters to the market garden this year and will hold volunteer days where you can get stuck in.

We have always strived to grow our produce mindfully and ecologically and in sympathy with our surroundings. One of our core aims is to grow food that is both affordable and nutritious for the local people we serve.

We currently deliver food boxes to customer’s doorsteps, attend local farmers markets and also sell our produce to cafés and restaurants in West Cornwall. We’re really excited to also be growing for our new retail site in Porthleven.

We hope to meet as many of you as possible in the coming year and look forward to what 2025 brings!

My name is Sheila, and I volunteer at Mount Carlees Farm,

and have been invited to become part of the community,

and been given a couple of beds in the veggie garden for myself

and other volunteers to grow their own vegetables.

This Year I plan to grow unusual varieties, and also herbs, and am putting the finishing touches to a shed myself and Ash, another volunteer, are building in the orchard. From my first visit to Mount Carlees Farm, it felt like "coming home".
