Spring Happenings at Mount Carlees Farm

An update from Mount Carlees Farm and the One Life Community Project

With the exceptional weather this spring, everyone has been busy here at Mount Carlees and within the ecological initiative we call the One Life Community.

All of the new meadowland cultivators and market garden endeavours are up and running, with vegetable and salad beds now thriving, alongside the construction of polytunnels.

In May, we welcomed the Any Size Landowners gathering, organised by Wildlife Groundswell.

"On Sunday 4th May nearly two dozen folks from the Lizard and surrounding districts gathered in the sunshine at Mount Carlees Farm near Ruan Major.

We were treated to a guided tour of the farm's pasture, nature-rich scrub and moorland by Peter Noble, who with his late wife has spent the past twenty five years cherishing this land and fostering its potential for positive interactions between people and nature.  Peter's sympathetic approach to landownership has enabled the local wildlife to thrive, whilst at the same time providing an essential resource for young horticultural entrepreneurs to grow food for the community.

After the tour, we enjoyed a delicious al fresco lunch provided by Ronnie and Diana Gonzales and others.  We all left inspired and enthused, and look forward to the next get-together of the Any Size Landowners group, which will take place, hopefully in June, in the Godolphin Cross area (June 22nd 11:30am). Keep and eye on the Wildlife Groundswell Events page for updates on this"

The most recent new arrivals here are a lovely herd of Dexter cattle, brought to the farm to graze by Willie Watson of Natural England.

Sheilah and her team of volunteers have taken on the veggie garden, which is now well planted. Together with the orchard and polytunnel, it has become a peaceful oasis for quiet gardening — and a good cup of tea.

Jenny’s Piccolo Orto market garden has now extended an invitation to local people in the form of Wild Wednesdays: Women’s Group.

A small footbridge across Toad Valley — the space between two meadows — has recently been built.

New flower planting around the pond has sprung up in spontaneous, creative joy. Beautiful flowers, shrubs, and succulents now bloom in pots and hanging baskets.

And finally, Open Studio begins this weekend — 24th May — with three participants opening their workspaces and sharing their creations.
